Spring 2010 - Topo-Vínculo Comunitario

Professor: Gabriel Montemayor

Students: Gillian Baresich and Ray Buchelt

This urban design project restructures the current suburban typology within Nogales to one that reconnects the community with the existing natural landscape. This approach incorporates preservation, increased density and neighborhood activities that promote a sense of community. The layout of the project is one that works with the undisturbed topography, placing buildings along the natural ridges and arroyos.

 Professor: Jack Debartolo 3

While technology advances exponentially, it creates an isolated and closed off community. Due to this, social interaction becomes more heavily dependent upon technology. The library of the 21st century demands a breaking of this isolation, while presenting technology in an interactive, social format.

Summer 2009 Studio - Salvage Park

Salvage Park design for City of Tempe

Professors: Catherine Spellman, Zubin Shroff

Students: Gillian Baresich, Natalia Mattingly

The site is currently an abandoned retention basin, where the city hopes to develop a park with sports fields. The main focus of the project was salvaging the existing elements, such as the graffiti, vegetation, environment, highway girders, etc.. The studio acted as an internship.

Professor: Catherine Spellman

Students: Gillian Baresich, Eduardo Santamaria, Matt McDaniel, Jennifer Glitsos

We began this studio by deriving a pattern from a desert plant.  We then created a concrete building block from this pattern that would be used as a sustainable solution for the use of concrete in the desert.  The final project was designing a transportation hub in Tempe, utlizing the concrete element in different scales.

Fall 2008 Studio - Pre-Fab Residential

Professor: Philip Horton

This studio was based entirely on pre-fabricated construction.  We first designed a sleeping space, then moved on to low-cost residential structures located in the Harmon neighborhood in Phoenix.  After making many variations, we refined the final design and concentrated on methods of construction.

Professor: Patrick Mayers

The first part of this studio consisted of designing a Mediation Wall.  This wall was then placed inside our cemetery site, Pioneer and Military Memorial Park in Phoenix.  We then designed a landscaped renovation of the cemetery and in the final phase, added an administration building, a gallery, and a public gathering space.

Fall 2007 Studio - Symbiosis

Professor: Milagros Zingoni

In this studio, we began with figure-ground explorations, then incorporated the refined piece into a program layout for a site inside Arizona State University in Tempe.  The site was turned into a landscaped garden design, and finally held a gallery space, cafe, conservatory, and indoor gathering areas.
